Faith Equals Trust Minus Hind-sight

Filed under: Linda Ritchie — Linda @ 1:40 pm

This year my eldest daughter, Hannah, started Grade 0 in a brand-new school. It was a very happy day preceded by much excitement and anticipation. However, this transition to ‘big school’ was an issue that caused me much stress and even a few tears last year.

When it came to deciding on which school to send our three girls, I was faced by two options but I had my own preference. I had asked the Lord to make it clear which school He wanted our girls to attend. I thought that there was a very good chance of getting Hannah into either school; I had even put Hannah’s name on the waiting list of my personal favourite – at which time I was assured that she had a very good chance of getting in – when she was only ten months old!

At the start of last year when the schools started contacting the parents of the children who had been accepted, the realization slowly dawned on me that Hannah had not been accepted into the school of my choice. Word was out that the 2010 intake of Grade 0’s for that particular school was dominated my siblings and the daughters of past pupils and there were very few places available for anybody else.

Needless to say, I was devastated. Of course, I knew that God knows what’s best for us but this wasn’t my choice and I felt that He was forcing me to settle for second best. (As if He ever would!)

Now, a week into the new academic year I am really starting to see the all-inclusive extent to which God knows what’s best for us. Hannah is happily settled in a small private Christian school that is a mere five minute drive from our home, has lovely teachers and staff and just the type of nurturing environment she thrives in.

I wish I could have experienced the peace I now feel about the school throughout the course the last year when I was constantly beset by doubts about God’s decision. It would have saved me so much heartache.

I guess this experience has taught me what real faith is; trusting God for the future before we get there!

  3. “trusting God for the future before we get there”. Ouch.

It reminds me of Jesus and the disciples going to the other side when Jesus falls asleep and a very bad storm ensues. I can just imagine the disciples screaming for help, waking Jesus up. . . He rebuked them for their little faith.

Sometimes it feels as if Jesus is asleep in my boat, but I will not wake Him up. I will trust in Him. He said that we are going to the other side, and so we will. Regardless.

  5. Reading these kind of posts reminds me of just how technology truly is ever-permeating in this day and age, and I can say with 99% certainty that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don’t mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside… I just hope that as memory gets less expensive, the possibility of downloading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It’s a fantasy that I daydream about every once in a while.

  13. Completely true. Read Prov 3v5-6. We are to trust in the Lord with all our heart, always, believing that His will is best for us, even if we are taught patience while we wait for His manifestation.
That is what it means to have faith.
